Night Shift specs
Night Shift specs pin down the settings, checks and handover points that matter once day support has gone home.
Handover points before evening start
The Night Shift specs page sets out the operating details that usually decide whether an evening run stays controlled. It covers handover notes, visibility at the line and the way faults are recorded when support is thinner after hours.
Begin with the board revision, planned start time and the line configuration booked for the evening run. Night work on South African SMT lines often has to account for reduced engineering cover, power backup status, and whether incoming material was released before the day crew signed off. Johannesburg static conditions, Durban humidity and Cape Town salt air can each change stencil care, paste handling and inspection frequency.
Record machine status before the first reel is loaded for the shift. Include feeder positions, current nozzle set, oven recipe name and any open fault from the previous crew so the night operator is not tracing old problems at 23:00. A simple line-side note near the printer or placement machine helps keep the same build standard across both crews.
After-hours line pack contents
Capture paste batch, feeder map, reflow profile reference and the inspection points that need repeating after changeover. Also show who accepted first article, where rejects are logged and which boards are held for morning review. That keeps the evening run tied to the same board history as the day shift.
Link Night Shift specs to the matching Lines route, the relevant Reflow note and the current Board notes entry before adding extra checks. Before close of shift, verify WIP quantity, quarantine trays and labels on any partial build. SMT line enquiries should name the board type, the placement volume and the machines already on the line.
- Feeder map checked at shift start
- First article signed off for night run
- Fault log kept beside the line
After-hours conditions on SA lines
Evening production often runs with fewer technicians on site, so the spec must state which stoppages the operator can clear and which ones wait for engineering. Export work moving through OR Tambo, regional dispatch cut-offs and backup power limits can all affect whether a batch should be completed, parked or split across shifts. Older factories may also have weaker lighting at the placement area, making board visibility part of the operating note.
Along the coast, paste storage discipline and moisture control matter more during overnight builds, especially when doors open for late dispatch. Inland sites usually see more dust around covers, sensors and tape paths, so cleaning intervals should be written into the shift detail rather than left to memory. Where power interruptions are still a risk, note exactly when to save counts, print traceability records and stop the oven sequence.

Night-run record keeping
Use Night Shift for board builds that need after-hours placement, reflow planning and handover between crews.
File the Night Shift specs against the same board code used on the job card and inspection record. Add any support documents on paste, profile or placement only if they are current for that build. A short, accurate sheet is more useful at 02:00 than a long pack with mixed revisions.
