Shift Cards

A practical note on shift cards, for teams that need each SMT operator to pick up the line status without guesswork.

When one operator calls a setup complete and the next still has to hunt for feeder data, the shift card is doing too little. Shift Cards explains what to record around product code, stencil, reel positions and exceptions so the SMT line can carry on with less rework.

Shift Cards should read like the line at that moment, not like a meeting note. Record what machine is running, what is waiting, and what the next operator must verify before pressing start.

Details that belong on the card

  • Plant, line, date and shift
  • Current board ID, side, and last approved first-off noted clearly
  • Stencil code, program name, and feeder map reference recorded together
  • Operator name, handover time, and supervisor sign-off where required

Pair this note with the machine pages that match your line layout and feeder banks. Shift Cards make more sense when the operator can cross-check nozzle setup, stencil ID and any open defect note against the supporting record. Use the journal entry only as the run history, not as a replacement for the handover card.

How Shift Cards keep SMT handovers clear on the line

Shift Cards sets out what each operator needs to see when taking over an SMT line. The card should show line status, current board, key checks and any open issues without long explanation. Use this note to reduce guesswork between shifts.

A useful shift card starts with the exact product code, board revision and running quantity. Then add the conditions that change decisions on a South African SMT line, such as load-shedding interruptions, coastal moisture around open reels, or a late parts delivery from Johannesburg, Durban or Cape Town. Teams in smaller industrial areas also need space for manual workarounds when one feeder bank or printer is down.

Capture the line condition before the next shift arrives. One photo of the feeder table, one note on open rejects, and one clear mention of any component substitution will save time when production restarts after a break or power event. Keep the card near the line or filed with the job pack.

What the next operator gets

A proper card gives the incoming operator the board, the setup state, and the exceptions still open. That matters more than a neat template with missing reel positions or no note on printer offsets. On a busy line, short factual entries beat long explanations every time.

Tie Shift Cards back to the matching reflow settings and the relevant Board notes entry when process changes are involved. Before packed boards leave the area, verify labels, quantities and any hold status written during the shift. SMT line enquiries should name the board type, the placement volume and the machines already on the line.

  • Handover points matched to the running line
  • First-off status marked before shift change
  • Named contact person for the handover

Line conditions that change the handover

South African electronics plants rarely run under one fixed condition all week. Cards need room for generator changeovers, dispatch cut-offs, shared operators between lines, and older equipment that needs manual checks after a stop. Write the note for the actual site, not for an ideal install that never loses power or never swaps feeders between products.

Near the coast, paste handling, reel storage and stencil wiping may need extra comment during humid periods. Inland sites often battle dust on covers, sensors and feeder lanes, so the card should show what was cleaned and what still needs checking. If production paused during a power interruption, mark whether first-article approval must be repeated.

Shift card checks worth recording

A practical note on shift cards, for teams that need each SMT operator to pick up the line status without guesswork.

Complete the card while the details are still in front of the operator. Include rejects under review, missing parts, temporary feeder moves, and any board count difference between machine totals and packed quantity. That record helps quality, stores and the next shift read the same production picture.
